When your router is connected to the Sail Internet network, it is assigned an Internet Protocol (IP) address to be able to send packets to or receive packets from various internet services, servers or hosts. If you are a residential customer, you may notice that this IP address can change over time, for example after powering up the router following an extended period of turning it off. You can find the IP address assigned to your router either by logging into your router, or by typing whatismyipaddress in the Google search bar from a device inside your home network.
If you are a residential customer that wants to remotely connect to your home network, then you need to know the IP address assigned to your router. In that case, there are a couple of options for making it easier to keep track of this IP address:
- Static IP: You can lease from Sail Internet a static IP for residential service at a cost of $10/month. This will ensure you always have the same IP address
- Dynamic DNS (DDNS): You can use a 3rd party service to define a domain name for your router. The dynamic DNS function will be constantly updating its DNS service with the IP address of your router. You can google "dynamic dns" to find more about and compare the available DDNS services. Some of these services are free.
