Check out our video on how to test your signal strength.
We hope you’ve been enjoying Sail Internet. We’re talking internet speed today. When you activated your account with Sail, we sent a PDF on how to run a wired speed test but here is a refresher.
We think Sail has impressive speeds compared to the competition. So many things can factor into that speed once the signal hits your home: from the hardware of your router and device to the software of your browser.
We’re going to show you how to test your speed to get a baseline from which you can diagnose any problem that’s been slowing you down.
First, go to Google and type “what is my internet speed?”
Now run a wired speed test
Google is great for finding out what your speed is on your end device, like your phone. But you also want to know as accurately as possible what speed you’re receiving at the connection.
Here is a step-by-step guide to that:
Restart your router and other devices. Unplug your router and reboot your computer. Count to 10. Then plug back in and turn on.
For Condos and Apartments:
- Connect your router's WAN port to the Sail outlet.
- Connect your router to your computer. Plug an Ethernet cable from your router’s LAN port to your computer.
For Single Family Homes and Businesses:
- Connect your router's WAN port to the PoE power device.
- Connect your router to your computer. Plug an Ethernet cable from your router’s LAN port to your computer.
Download the Ookla Speedtest™ App for your computer. The desktop App is more accurate than using your browser and it will auto-select a server to test your connection.
Now, you can run a wired speed test.
Be sure to turn off the Wi-Fi on your computer prior to starting your speed test. If your speeds are still slow, try connecting to other local servers such as “Mimosa Santa Clara, CA.” Test again with other servers.
This will give you a great overview and baseline of your internet speeds. Test regularly to measure any improvement or issues with your connection.
